BBM 7 vs Skype vs FaceTime

After dancing around the issue of voice over internet protocol (VoIP), Research in Motion finally decided to join in the fray. The update rolled out this week and once you upgrade your BBM from Blackberry AppWorld, you will get the option to configure a WiFi profile; this will enable the voice chat to be activated.
Before now, all you had was voice memo, and you could record up to an hour's worth of audio, then send via BBM or email; but now, we're going real-time. It is unclear at this time if we can have a conference voice chat or a group chat. One thing is certain though, we the consumers will take this latest addition and stretch it to its limits and if RIM releases the BB10 before we get bored of this, then they will have recovered to an extend and capture the market that is opening up from frustrated Nokia, Apple, Samsung, LG, and Tecno mobile device users.
Kudos to RIM for recognizing the fact that the so-called 3G connectivity on offer by various GSM service providers is epileptic at best, hence, the WiFi option. You should realize however that whoever you want to have a voice chat with must also be on a WiFi connection and must have upgraded the BBM to version 7.
This is a late entry, but its better late than never, and RIM will have a lot of selling to do since consumers are already in the arms of Microsoft with Skype, Nimbuzz, eBuddy, Apple with FaceTime and others.
You will get a short tutorial after you perform the upgrade of your BBM and that will show you around a bit, and until you setup a WiFi profile, you will not be able to initiate a voice chat. This is very advantageous in the sense that RIM boasts of Data Compression and Voice will extrapolate the data usage of Blackberry users worldwide, hence the WiFi option.
We can only assume that BBM 8 will come with the video chat option just like apple FaceTime already does and Skype leading the pack.
Let us know your experience while making use of the voice chat option, questions are welcome too.
